From what I read at DDB, it seems like if the 3.1.5d upgrade is allowed to go through, it will install a kernel on which the killhdinitrd is ineffective, leaving one with a freshly de-hacked HDTivo on which one could start from one's original backup. I guess I should unplug my phone line, since I understand that the instruction to run the upgrade package comes during a phone call.

I would like to get some more info on what someone (borghe) at DDB seems to have done, manually run the upgrade but then switch kernels back. Looks like I need to do some more reading, any pointers on where to start?

Sorry, I don't have any advice on what to do, just to add my concerns. This is one of the main reasons I've been waiting to hack my Tivo in the first place. Does killhdinitrd work on the updated kernel? I realize that your saying that it will wipe out the current hack, but can one start with the upgraded kernel?

It would be nice if there was a way to disable updates besides unplugging the phone line. I will probably need to use the phone line to order a few college football games from ESPN plus this season.

There is already a fix.

Agreed. But the upgrade process requires two reboots. If you can
figure it out then please post the results. Here's how I got my hacks
reinstalled in about 10 minutes:

The old partitions where:
6 = kernel
7 = root
9 = var

The new partitions:
3 = kernel (new, so killhdinitrd is no longer installed)
4 = root (new, so all your hacks are gone)
6 = old_kernel with the killhdinitrd patch still in place
7 = old_root with all your hacks still in place
9 = var (not rebuilt, so your files are still there)

Here's my upgrade:

- removed TiVo drive, moved to PC
- mkdir /mnt/var
- mkdir /mnt/root
- mkdir /mnt/old_root
- mount /dev/hdX9 /mnt/var
- mount /dev/hdX4 /mnt/root
- mount /dev/hdX7 /mnt/old_root
- dd if=/dev/hdX3 of=/mnt/var/orig_kernel.img (or save it elsewhere)
- dd if=/dev/hdX6 of=/dev/hdX3
- cp /mnt/old_root/.profile /mnt/root
- cp /mnt/old_root/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author /mnt/root/etc/rc.d
- chmod 755 /mnt/root/.profile
- chmod 755 /mnt/root/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author
- sync, then ctrl-alt-del to shutdown
- once TiVo is up again, copy the saved kernel.img to somewhere other
than the TiVo

Only problem is we are running on the older kernel, but once they
patch killhdinitrd we can restore partition 3, apply patch, and we be
done.
